October Surprise: The Ties That Bind
More to come soon, as I am digesting this information as I write this...
However, CNSNews.com has published an exclusive report with 42 internal memos and orders from Saddam Hussein's regime detailing definitive links and relationships with al Qaida dating back to the early 1990's.
...One of the Iraqi memos contains an order from Saddam for his intelligence service to support terrorist attacks against Americans in Somalia. The memo was written nine months before U.S. Army Rangers were ambushed in Mogadishu by forces loyal to a warlord with alleged ties to al Qaeda.
...Among the organizations mentioned are those affiliated with Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and Ayman al-Zawahiri, two of the world's most wanted terrorists.
...Bruce Tefft, a retired CIA official who specialized in counter-terrorism and had extensive experience dealing with Iraq, said that "based on available, unclassified and open source information, the details in these documents are accurate ..."
..."[Bush's] two main rationales - weapons of mass destruction and the al Qaeda/September 11 (2001) connection - have been proved false ... by the president's own weapons inspectors ... and by the 9/11 Commission," Kerry told an audience at New York University on Sept. 20.
The Senate Intelligence Committee's probe of the 9/11 intelligence failures also could not produce any definitive links between Saddam's government and 9/11. And United Nations as well as U.S. weapons inspectors in Iraq have been unable to find the biological and chemical weapons Saddam was suspected of possessing.
But the documents obtained by CNSNews.com shed new light on the controversy...
The article goes on to detail Iraqi WMD acquisitions in August and September of 2000 and a litany of terrorist connections, collaboration and cooperation.
Two immediate questions:
1. What is so severely wrong with our intelligence community that these documents are barely now being translated? This is proof that sweeping changes need to be made and the prevailing 'culture' within the Intelligence 'Community' needs to be dismantled. Period.
2. How long will it take for the 'Wrong War, Wrong Time, Wrong Place' crowd to come up with a New and Improved Defense of their position?
This is but one of the October surprises. Expect one more from Lybian intelligence revelations (Saddam's documented outsourcing of his nuclear research to Khaddafi) and quite possibly the capture or vaporization of Osama bin Laden.
Also bear in mind that al Qaida desperately seeks their own October Surprise: to strike us beyond the scope of September 11th before Election Day. I agree with Yossef Bodansky's assessment that al Qaida definitely has suitcase nuclear devices at their disposal and are held in check only by sponsoring states (read here Iran) who fear the devastation of an American response. Bodansky states:
There is ample evidence from impeccable sources that the Islamist-Jihadist forces are adamant on striking out before the U.S. elections. Some of the warnings specify a commitment to inflicting mass casualties on an unprecedented scale – perhaps through the use of a nuclear suitcase-bomb (which they definitely have).
At the same time, however, the key terrorism sponsoring states urge prudence – fearing U.S. retribution. Right now, there are intense theological deliberations within the Islamist movement about what to do next. We will surely see the outcome of these deliberations.
Likely, the only reliable way to transport and detonate such a device is to approach by sea, shift the device(s) to smaller craft (inflatable motorized raft or other small vessel) and beach at a major city like Baltimore, Miami, Long Beach Port, Elizabeth (NJ) Port, Houston or Seattle. A west coast detonation would have a greater effect as wind currents would carry contamination across the continental US rather than out into the Atlantic. However, Houston (via Mexican coast) may be the easiest and Baltimore the most desirable (closest to Washington, DC) for added psychological effect.
Ask yourself, where exactly is that phantom al Qaida navy of 15 (dispersed) cargo ships that we have heard nothing about for 2 years?
