Marine Recruit Drowning Perspective: Part II
The Marine Corps Drill Instructor Creed
(Read previous post, Perspective: Part I.)
"These recruits are entrusted to my care. I will train them to the best of my ability. I will develop them into smartly disciplined, physically fit, basically trained Marines, thoroughly indoctrinated in love of Corps and country. I will demand of them, and demonstrate by my own example, the highest standards of personal conduct, morality, and professional skill."
Amidst the wave of media critics of the Marine Corps Drill Instructors' conduct surrounding the recent drowning death of a recruit in boot camp on Parris Island, SC, it is important to maintain perspective and reserve judgement until the facts are discovered.
Our Marine Drill Instructors have earned the benefit of the doubt until such time.
Am I the only observer who finds it odd that the media cannot get a tape from a public forum to prove or disprove the accusations made by Eason Jordan, but the industrious press finds video of one specific Drill Instructor in a non-public military setting and uses it without hesitation or reservation?
No tape can be made available for Eason Jordan, but a mean and murderous bastard of a Jarhead? Yeah…we got that.
It’s almost as if to say in the wake of Eason Jordan, “See? We told you they were murderous bastards. Now get off Eason’s back.”
Why is it that when one of their own comes under scrutiny (Jordan, Rather, Mapes, Moyers et al), the scrutinized are given the benefit of silence, let alone any benefit of doubt? But when it comes to any sorry son of a bitch that wears The Uniform, he is portrayed as inherently aggressive/evil/mean/murderous. Do they not also deserve the benefit of the doubt (let alone silence)? Have they not at least earned that much before they are demonized and crucified?
Can we at least reserve public prosecution until the facts are known?
The alacrity of the media's demonic portrayal of this Drill Instructor is enraging.
Semper Fidelis, Marines.
